For Lego World 2009 in the Netherlands I wanted to make a remote controlled version of the Crane Truck (8258). It seemed pretty easy, after all, it’s a pretty big truck, right? Well, I had underestimated the amount of space the gears and all the bevels take up.
In addition to the 4 powered functions in the original model, I wanted to be able to drive and steer the truck. That meant a total of 6 PF motors; 5 small ones and one large one for the rear wheels.
I ripped out all of the intricate gears and gear boxes that were housed in the middle. The original model really is a work of art, truly worthy of being the 2009 flagship. I felt a little bad for undoing such a wonderful complex design but it had to be done, I guess. I took some pictures while building it and some afterwards (I just removed some pieces to show the inside). Click on them for a larger version.
I’ve also made a video of the whole thing so you can see it move. If you click on the video, it’ll open it in YouTube and you can watch the HQ/HD version. Enjoy!
Hoi Xander,
bedankt voor de link.
Perfect gemodificeerd model. Goede foto`s!
Hier kan ik heel wat inspiratie uit halen…
Groeten,
Patrick
WOW that is amazing. I don’t understand how you can fit all those motors in there. When i try to make something RC it failed (you can see my attempt on youtube). Well it worked but just looked ugly this looks like it was meant to be…good job 🙂
Wow! That’s totally awesome. How can’t love that. I want to build your version. So could you give me the instruction? If you sent to my email, I will really appreciate that. Thank you and regards, J.Kay
There are no instructions. I built this based on the existing model and modified it. The photographs are all that’s left of it. I took it apart a few weeks ago.
Oh! I see. Anyway that’s amazing! Thank you for your anwer.
My email address is ‘jkay904@hotmail.com’. Thank you again and regards, J.Kay.
I tried for 3 weeks, but i can not build your version, it’s so bad! can you show me more details how to put the motor inside??? I like your version, it’s so awesome.
Thank so much !
I’m sorry but I can’t. The model is no longer together, I took it apart ages ago. All the pictures I have are on the net. I have nothing else.

No, what you see is what I have. I built that thing almost 4 years ago and took it apart a little while later. I’m afraid you’re on your own 🙂
I have also made one inspired by Xander’s mod a few years ago, but I have used a NXT instead of PF for propulsion. The crane is controlled using PF, just like Xander did. I took a lot of pictures , so maybe this helps : http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=424480
